BIOGRAPHY
I am English artist, illustrator, designer and entrepreneur, currently based in London. I was born in Sussex and grew up in Surrey, England. I run my own accessories business as well as painting and doing illustration work, and I am currently working on quite a few books for 2025.
I established my eponymous design brand in 2001, which I recently renamed HEIDI. I have a loyal international clientele, built up over many years. After A Levels (Biology, Art and Textiles - History of Costume/Dress making/Textile Science), I completed an Art Foundation Course at Croydon Art College and then a four year BA (Hons) in 3D Design & Contemporary Jewellery at Middlesex University (including a term at the Fachochschule Dusseldorf and work experience at Erickson Beamon in London). After graduating in 1992, I worked as a senior designer and head of design for a variety different companies, in both couture and retail, on numerous international projects. In 1996, I went freelance and eventually put together my first own brand collection in 2001.
My first collection of jewellery and sculptural handbags was hand printed with my botanical illustrations. I was shortlisted for London Fashion Week in 2001 but didn’t get in, so instead of waiting another year, I launched my collection at Pure (a trade fair in London), with the smallest stand I could get. I didn’t have much interest until the last afternoon of the show, which resulted in me doing collections for TopShop in their Oxford Street Shop and Arki Boutique in Tokyo, Japan. In those days, there was no instagram, so working with magazines was the main way to get exposure. I did lots of custom pieces, in return for press coverage at that time, including accessories for Pink, Naomi Campbell and Atomic Kitten. From that point on, I started doing more wholesale collections and supplying many boutiques and galleries (see below), both in the UK and internationally. This has changed over the years, with the advent of the internet and like many artists and designers, I sell much more directly to customers these days as well. I continue to do freelance illustration commissions and have created bespoke artwork for Fortnum & Mason & Camden Graphics among others.
I come from an artistic family, gong back several generations and my mum was an extremely talented artist and creative. She worked in architecture for six years but gave it up to have a family. So I’ve been designing and drawing from a very young age. At 15 years old, I won a competition to design a storyboard for an Alvin Stardust pop video on BBC Saturday Superstore. My winning video were rediscovered in 2011 by North One TV and has been featured on Britain’s Favourite Christmas Songs on Channel 5 every Christmas since.
